The "Glock" family of pistols is pretty well known - even as a kid I recognized the name (and thought it sounded goofy, which I still do). However, goofy name aside, it's an effective and trusted firearm and has been for years, so hit the jump to read all about it!

Do it! Don't make me pull out my glock!

The Glock comes to us from Austria - the land that also gave us Arnold Schwarzenegger - from weapons manufacturer Glock GmbH, founded in 1963 by Gaston Glock.

In 1980, the Austrian military was looking for a replacement duty pistol for the Walther P38, a widely-used pistol in World War II. Most gamers would undoubtedly know this pistol as "the German pistol." Glock eventually won the contract with his Glock 17 (company's 17th patent) model of pistol. In 1982, the Austrain military and police forces started using the weapon under the name the P80, which stood for Pistole 80.

The firearm then started seeing use with the Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish armed forces. Within a decade, approximately 350,000 pistols has been sold all around the world, including a quarter of a million in the United States.

The Glock 18C is featured in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. You can purchase one from Drebin, but you can also find one in Act 2, prior to the seige on Vista Mansion.

The Glock 18C is a selective-fire variant that was developed at the request of an Austrian counter-terrorist unti. Selective-fire means that aside from having a semi-auto function, like the standard Glocks, the 18C model can also fire at full auto.

Hey, this is another one that's in Socom as well.

I still probably wouldn't want one. As cool as a fully auto 9mm handgun sounds, I'd prefer precision shooting, and a higher caliber.
