The FN SCAR is a modular assault battle rifle designed by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, a Belgian firearms manufacturer responsible for the Five Seven and the P90. I love the FN SCAR, if only because it sounds like you're saying the f'n scar.
"What gun is that, man?"
"Oh this? This is the f'n SCAR!"
That's right. Read on.
The SCAR was created by FHN for SOCOM, the U.S. Special Operations Command, as part of a competition. There are two main types of this rifle: The Mark 16, or SCAR-L (LIGHT), and the Mark 17, or SCAR-H (HEAVY). The SCAR-L is an assault rifle that uses the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, while the SCAR-H is a battle rifle that uses the 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition.
The Mark 17, the battle rifle, is the type found in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It can be purchased from Drebin for 3,500 points, or found in various parts of the game, as it's used by both PMS soldiers and resistance members. Similar to real life, the weapon can be fitted with a variety of accessories, including special grips and sights.
The SCAR is a relatively new rifle and was put into field use in the Fall of 2007. The rifle will be produced by the FN Manufacturing LLC, plant in South Carolina. The manufacturers plan to introduce a semi-auto version of the SCAR modular rifle system around 2008, but no announce has yet been made. The semi-auto variant would be for law enforcement and civilian use.
