The AN-94 - also known as the Abakan - is a Russian assault rifle that is featured in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It can be picked up from Drebin for 5,000 points or found in the Cove Valley Village in South America in a South-East shack. People really shouldn't leave assault rifles just lying around.

The initials in the weapon's name stand for Avtomat Nikonova, after Gennadiy Nikonov, the gun's designer. The 94 simply stands for 1994, presumably the year of the inital design.
The AN-94 was created to replace the AK-74 as the Russian Military's weapon of choice. However, the military continued to use the AK-74 as its standard weapon and instead issued the AN-94 to the Russian police, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and certain elite forces of the military. Unlike almost all other Russian-made weapons, the AN-94 is sold exclusively in its home country.
The AN-94 is capable of mounting a GP-30 grenade launcher attachment, which is accurately replicated in Metal Gear Solid 4. The actual gun can also simultaneously mount a bayonet, yet this is not available in the game.
The AN-94 is not the perfect weapon. Despite being more accurate and having a higher rate of burst-fire than the AK-74, these improvements come with a price, as the AN-94 costs five to six times more to produce than the AK. The internal workings of the AN are also much more complex, making it considerably more difficult to use and therefore more expensive to train soliders.
After everything I read about the AN-94, what I took away in the end is that it's just too awesome. Yes, I'm sure of it.
