The AO-63 Assault Rifle is a bit of a mystery. Not only am I not sure where it appears in the Metal Gear series, it seems that people aren't even sure what the rifle even looks like.
The above image is from the 1989 Dolph Lundgren movie Red Scorpion. After googling the firearm, that's all I could find in terms of pictures. However, that's not a real AO-63, but an FN FAL modified to look like an AO-63.
There are some things we know about the AO-63. We know it was designed in 1986 by two Russians, Sergei Simonov and Peter Tkachev, and manufactured by TsNIITochMash. Don't ask me how to pronounce that.
The twin-barreled gun, when fired in two round burst mode, is theoretically capable of firing up to an amazing 6,000 rounds per minute, which would possibly make it the worlds fastest firing assault rifle.
In the mid-1980s, he Spetsnaz used it in the Abakan assault rifle trials when they were looking for something more accurate than the AK-47. They tested it alongside numerous rifles and the Nikonov AN-94 came out the winner.
There isn't a lot of information on the AO-63, which only adds to its mysterious nature. Given its impressive rate of fire, I personally think it was brought back from the future. The Terminator came back in 1984, just two years prior to the gun's debut. Maybe it wasn't designed after all, but discovered.
I think it's a solid theory.
