I was surprised to find out that I hadn't yet covered a regular ol' hand grenade here on OMG Metal Gear. I've covered the stun grenade, the white phosphorus grenade, and even the fictitious frag grenade of the Halo universe but never a standard hand grenade. This week I bring you the M67 fragmentation hand grenade.

The M67 hand grenade, which originated in the US, is used by Solid Snake often, even when battling Mario and his cohorts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's also currently used by the United States Military and Canadian Forces; the Canadians refer to it as the C13. The M67 replaced the M61 and Mk 2 grenades used during the Vietnam War and World War II, respectively.

The M67 fragmentation grenade weighs 14 ounces, which is just two ounces shy of a pound. It's 2.5 inches in diameter, which is slightly smaller than a regulation baseball. It's filled with Composition B explosive, which consists of a mix of RDX and TNT. Comp B, as it's more commonly known, is standard in military hardware. Finally, the grenade is detonated by a four-second pyrotechnic delay M213 fuse.

Next week I'll talk about how the grenade works and how to properly use one. You know, in case you even find one lying around and want to know how to safely operate it.

I've noticed that games don't seem to treat grenades quite correctly. Sure, you'be gotta worry about the explosion from the grenade, but in gaming you don't have to worry about the shrapnel from that explosion. Grendes are wrapped in metal, and they send shrapnel flying. Games, and even movies just treat them like a cloud of dust gets kicked up, and you won't get hurt if you're not touched by the explosion.

I'm not speaking from experience of using grenades, but realistically, explosions send shrapnel, and grenades are designed to sent metal shrapnel as well.

This has crossed my mind before, too. Usually I let it slide, but it more realistic games, it tends to bug me.
