Last week I began my feature on the tried and true M67 grenade, appalled that I hadn't done so sooner. Alright, appalled may be a strong word, but I was definitely surprised. Hit the jump for the second part of this long overdue feature.
The average soldier can throw the 14 ounce grenade roughly 30 meters, which is almost 100 feet. For you sports types, that's almost a third the length of a football field. Accuracy is another matter entirely and much more important than throwing distance.
Once the 4.2 second fuse burns down, the grenades explodes, and shrapnel is dispersed, killing anyone within 15 feet of the blast and wounding those within 45 feet. That said, there are a lot of variables involved, and some shell fragments can fly as far as 750 feet and still become embedded in people and objects, causing serious injury and possibly even death.
Next week I'll wrap up my feature on the M67 Fragmentation Grenade by talking about the standard operating procedure when using the weapon, including the proper throwing position and even the proper grip.
