In part four of my feature on the Beretta 92, I'll take a look at the weapon's design.

The Beretta 92 features an open slide design, which prevents jamming and allows for smooth feeding and ammo ejecting. The barrel is hard-chromed which protects from corrosion and barrel wear.

The magazine release button can easily be reversed with simple field tools. Reversing the button makes the gun easier for left-handed operators to use.

Polymers have become very popular in handguns for being lightweight and cheap to produce, so polymer has started to make its way into the Beretta 92/96 models. In 2003, the first polymer was introduced in a recoil spring guide. Now polymer safety levers, triggers, mainspring caps, magazine floorplates, and followers are becoming more common. So common, that parts of the gun are being painted black to match the polymer parts.

There are several variants that share the Beretta 92's internal design. The Beretta 90two is a full-size variant with a redesigned frame, slide, and grip, as well as an accessory rail.

Next week I'll go more in-depth with the variants.
